Dr Maritha Kotze is the founder and executive director of Gknowmix. She maintains close links with academia through an appointment at the University of Stellenbosch, promoting genome research innovation among students, scientists and clinicians. Since obtaining her PhD degree in 1990 she has supervised numerous postgraduate students and received the Rector's Award for Research Excellence in 1999. Her publications include more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and invited chapters in books. She received a patent incentive award in 2005 and was identified duing this time by the Institute for Scientific Information in the USA as one of the 20 highest ranking active publishers in the biomedical field in South Africa. Dr Tony Bunn is a director of Gknowmix. He obtained his PhD in Medical Science in 1980 and his research lead to the creation of one of the first SA university spin-out companies in 1984. Subsequent research has lead to the formation of another four successful start-up companies, all based on securing critical IP. He has also served as Chairman of a listed public company. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and supervised numerous MSc and PhD postgraduates. Tony presently holds an honourary position as associate professor in biomedical engineering at the University of Cape Town and is Director of the MRC Innovation Centre that manages innovation opportunities emanating from MRC research discovery. Rabogajane Busang is a Director of Gknowmix. He holds a BSc (Genetics) degree from the University of Pretoria. After completing his BSc degree in 2000 Rabogajane joined one of the leading Intellectual Property Law firms, Spoor & Fisher, where he gained invaluable experience in the field of Intellectual Property Law. During his five year stay at Spoor & Fisher, he enrolled for and completed the Patent Attorneys' Examinations. To further develop his business knowledge, Rabogajane completed a Management Advancement Programme in 2006 offered by the University of Witwatersrand, which included extensive courses in Economics, Finance & Accounting, Marketing, Strategic Management, Project Management and Human Resource Management. Emeritus Professor Peter Beighton is a medical geneticist who underpins the genetic counselling service and other clinically orientated activities offered by Gknowmix. He reviewed and approved the E-book that can be downloaded from this website, which provides a comprehensive overview of our pathology supported genetic testing concept. His academic awards include Fulbright and Oppenheimer Fellowships, a Silver Medal from the Medical Research Council (1997) and the Order of Mapungubwe, Bronze award for outstanding achievements in medical genetics (2002). Julie Malan is a registered genetic counsellor with a special interest in breast cancer genetics and the role environmental factors may play in the development of either familial or sporadic cancer. She graduated in 1993 with a BSc degree from the University of Pretoria and obtained her MSc degree in Genetic Counselling 5 years later. In 2003 Julie registered as the first private practicing genetic counsellor in South Africa and was appointed as the Genecare consultant genetic counsellor between 2003 and 2007. From 2008 she became part of the Gknowmix Genetic Care Centre and works in close collaboration with clinicians at various hospitals in the Gauteng region. Frieda Loubser graduated as a genetic counsellor at the University of Cape Town in 2005. She is the first registered genetic counsellor to train and work in Cape Town. In 2006 she performed her internship at the Division of Human Genetics at UCT and was subsequently appointed by the National Health Laboratory Services to perform genetic counselling on a part-time basis at Red Cross Children’s Hospital and Groote Schuur Hospital. She started her private practice at Genecare and has since opened a Genetic Counselling Clinic at the Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital and UCT Private Academic Hospital from the beginning of 2008. She is a committee member of the South African Society of Human Genetics and is involved in training of genetic counsellors at UCT. Her MSc thesis focused on inherited retinal degenerative disorders and she has a special interest in cancer genetic counselling. Lindiwe Whati is a registered dietician and nutrigenetics expert. She graduated in 2000 with a BSc (Dietetics) degree at the University of the Western Cape and obtained an MSc degree in Nutrition Science in 2005 from the University of Stellenbosch. She has been appointed as the Genecare consultant dietician from 2004-2006. She is actively involved with Gknowmix in the co-development of new tests for conditions where gene-diet interaction plays an important role. Previous experience in the field of nutrition includes management of chronic diseases in adults, nutrition therapy for hospitalised adults and children, nutrition education and research, as well as project management. She is registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa and a member of the Association for Dietetics South Africa.
